A fire near campus was under control Thursday afternoon, but those at Cal Poly were able to smell smoke from the blaze off U.S. Highway 1.
A Cal Fire spokesperson said firefighters stopped the spread after approximately 15 acres burned. It began at a shooting range on Gilardi Road approximately seven miles from campus.
Cal Fire dispatched seven fire engines, three hand crews, one bulldozer, two tankers, one air tactical supervisor, four overhead personnel and a water tender to the fire, the spokesperson said. Support came as far away as Morro Bay, she said.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
