Integrated Content Editor Carly Rickards: So you think you like craft beer?
I really don’t want to do this. But it’s true, the beer column is my pick of the week.
Mostly, I don’t want to pick it because Nick and Jake probably have big enough egos as it is, and because I will never hear the end of this. But they’re right. When Nick judged me for getting a ShockTop at Chino’s on Thursday night, I wasn’t totally surprised — I don’t really like it that much either, but I just can’t stomach 40 oz. of Stone IPA. However, I took their advice the next day and tried a PranQster (or two), and I now have a new favorite beer.
It’s also just a great column — yeah, they make you feel lame for liking Blue Moon, but they give you “replace” options that you will probably (definitely) like, and you will feel really cool when you order them in public. And now that these two are award-winning journalists (I’m not joking), I feel justified in choosing a beer column for my pick of the week.
Mustang Media Group Editor Sean McMinn: Cal Poly’s sexual assault reporting rate among lowest in CSU system
For all we hear about Safer and the work its staffers are doing to combat sexual violence at Cal Poly, the scope of the problem isn’t widely known. Federal statistics suggest 200 women would be sexually assaulted annually at a university of Cal Poly’s size, yet the University Police Department’s crime statistics suggest it is only occurring once per year. The first in a five-part series, reporter Anna Hörnell examines the limitations of the mandatory campus crime reporting law known as the Clery Act, as well as the state of sexual assault reporting at Cal Poly.
Editor in Chief J.J. Jenkins: Gay and greek
It’s hard to overstate how good Aryn Sanderson’s piece on being out in a fraternity at Cal Poly is. I’ve worked on the newspaper for four years, and it combines some of the best writing I’ve seen at the college level with a well-reported narrative on a topic unknown to most. Its impact was also heard far and wide. Normally the most viewed stories on our website deal with the least fun parts of our jobs, deaths and tragedy. But “Gay and greek” struck a chord with a broad community that flooded our website this week. Within five days, the story was the second-most viewed page on our website since we began keeping track more than a year ago. The story is well worth a read, and maybe even a share.
