Editor in Chief J.J. Jenkins: Phil Jones will ride again
At the beginning of the school year I challenged the writers on staff to experiment with long-form storytelling when they found a compelling tale with unique character. Benjy Egel did just that when he met Phil Jones, who lost much of his left leg in a motorcycle accident this past year. You see, Phil doesn’t want you to feel bad for him, because he doesn’t feel bad for himself, and Benjy’s story was able to highlight his struggles while allowing Phil’s sense of humor to shine through.

It’s near-impossible to know how many transgender students there are in the Cal Poly community, but it’s much easier to tell most on campus are in the dark when it comes to issues that are important to them. The lack of unisex bathrooms at Cal Poly isn’t often considered a high-priority issue in Mustang News or by administrators, but our reporter showed how important they are to transgender students. The facilities department’s apparent lack of information about the demand for LGBT-safe facilities shows this is a problem Cal Poly decision makers aren’t largely aware of, even though it could be solved in a simple and relatively cheap way if dealt with over the next five or 10 years.
