Lauren RabainoCal Poly senior Sharon Day won the women’s high jump at the 81st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas on Saturday by clearing 5 feet, 8 _ inches.
Junior Julieann Dufresne, an NCAA West Regional-qualifying discus thrower, came in 10th in that event at 153-5.
The Mustangs’ only other mark came on behalf of junior sprinter Tredale Tolver, who clocked a 10.84-second time in the 100-meter dash to come in 31st place.
At the Stanford Invitational, sophomore Carl Dargitz qualified regionally Friday in the steeplechase with a time of 9:06.96, coming in a seventh-place tie in the “B” section.
Freshman Alfred Hines Jr. took second in his 110 hurdles heat Friday at 14.6, before coming in eighth in Saturday’s finals at 14.88.
The Mustangs will travel to the Jackie Joyner-Kersee/Rafer Johnson Invitational held at UCLA from Thursday through Saturday.
Baseball team swept in Northridge
The Cal State Northridge baseball team completed its first Big West Conference-series sweep since 2004 on Sunday by routing Cal Poly 8-3 at Matador Field.
In their fourth-straight loss, and 10th defeat in 12 contests, the Mustangs (9-17, 1-5) stranded 12 runners, despite compiling 13 hits.
After the Mustangs took a 2-0, first-inning lead built on RBI singles by junior third baseman Brent Morel and junior left fielder Ryan Lee, the Matadors crossed home plate in the first frame and tallied two more in the second to pull ahead.
Cal Poly junior center fielder Logan Schafer was plated in the third inning on an infield single by sophomore first baseman Wes Dorrell, but Cal State Northridge (13-13, 3-3), which won 9-7 Friday and 3-2 in 10 innings Saturday, broke the tie with a four-run third inning.
Lee was 4 for 5 while sophomore left fielder Luke Yoder and Dorrell each had three hits apiece for Cal Poly, whose sophomore right-hander Steven Fischback (3-3) allowed eight runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Peter Mendez (1-0), the second of six Matadors pitchers, earned the win.
The Mustangs will play five games this week, beginning with a 3 p.m. contest Tuesday at Pepperdine.
They host Fresno State at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Softball team swept by UC Santa Barbara
Finalizing the losing end of its first Big West Conference sweep in nearly three years, the Cal Poly softball team lost 2-1 Sunday at conference-leading UC Santa Barbara.
Mustangs starting left-hander Anna Cahn (5-8) struck out four, but a fifth-inning solo homer from UC Santa Barbara center fielder Tiffany Wright carried the Gauchos to victory, overcoming a fourth-inning homer from Mustangs freshman catcher Stephanie Correia.
UC Santa Barbara (23-14, 6-0) won 7-6 and 5-1 in a doubleheader sweep Saturday.
Cal Poly (15-16, 3-3) will continue Big West play in a doubleheader at Long Beach State beginning at noon Saturday.
