Change is in the air — and in the food.
According to an email from Campus Dining director Mike Thornton, several changes to Campus Dining are coming, including new restaurants and possible renovations to existing ones.
Market Sushi, located in Campus Market, is one of those changes. The new dining option provides freshly made sushi, Thornton said in the email.
Another venue named Red Radish is set to open in Ciao! during Fall 2014. According to Thornton’s email, it will serve fresh salads and resemble Pluto’s, a chain of sandwich and salad shops.
Ciao!, an existing venue, will be renovated as well. Changes include refreshing the front counter and implementing new dough and sauce recipes, the email said.
And Ciao may not be the only existing dining option to get a makeover.
According to Thornton’s email, Cal Poly Corporation began consultation with a company called DM&A WEBB over a year ago to see if certain facilities on campus needed changing, and if those changes would be feasible. The company spent time focusing on the buildings that hold Sandwich Factory, 19 Metro Station, The Avenue and Vista Grande Cafe.
Thornton said these ideas are not concrete.
“All of this is still early in the research and planning phase so, no, there are no demolition or construction dates – we’re still in the visioning phase,” the email said.
DM&A WEBB also worked on Cal Poly venues Campus Market and Julian’s Cafe.
Campus Dining has also talked about possible changes to campus meal plans, such as allowing students to use Plu$ Dollars or meal credits off campus, Director of Marketing and Communications for Student Affairs Yukie Murphy said.
However, all of Dining’s ideas are just conversation at this time, Murphy said.
In an earlier interview with Mustang News, Thornton emphasized Campus Dining’s tendency to constantly change — a tendency it is currently evincing.
“Our operations are constantly evolving,” said Thornton. “Either as a way to freshen them up, adjust to industry trends or in response to student feedback.”
Correction: An earlier version of the article states Yukie Murphy as the Director of Marketing and Communications. The story has been updated to state she is the Director of Marketing and Communications for Student Affairs.
