A candlelight vigil will be held Thursday for deceased business administration junior Matt Yount at 6 p.m. in the Julian A. McPhee University Union.
Yount passed away on Nov. 21 while studying abroad in Sevilla, Spain. His death was labeled an “apparent swimming accident” in an email from Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong and Vice President for Student Affairs Keith Humphrey.
Yount was also a member of the Cal Poly golf team. He competed in four tournaments as a freshman two years ago, notching an average 77.3 strokes in 11 rounds.
Yount redshirted his sophomore year and would have been able to return to the team following his quarter abroad in Spain.
A memorial service was held this past Saturday at St. Raymond Church in Dublin, Calif., according to a press release from Cal Poly Athletics.
The same release also stated a Matthew Yount Scholarship fund is being established.
Thursday’s ceremony marks the second candlelight vigil of the 2013-2014 school year, following an Oct. 6 service which honored four students who died since spring quarter.
