The Cal Poly men’s golf team used a home course advantage in cruising to a 45-stroke win at the inaugural Coast BMW-Coast Nissan Collegiate Golf Championship on Tuesday at the 6,724-yard, par-71 Monarch Dunes Golf Club in Nipomo.
The Mustangs were led by sophomore Jarod Knight’s 10-under-par, three-round total of 203, easily capturing the individual championship by eight strokes over Gregor Main of UCLA.
Knight’s victory was the first of his career and his third top-10 finish.
Knight shot three of the best rounds of his career at the six-school invitational, including a career-best round of 67 on Monday.
Three other men finished in the top 10 for the Mustangs, including sophomore Bryan Pierce (third, at 212), junior Geoff Gonzalez (fifth, 214) and senior Colin Peck (seventh, 215).
Also scoring for Cal Poly was Marshall Dick, who finished with 225 strokes for 19th place.
The combined team score of 844 was the second-best in the history of the Mustangs golf program.
Competing as individuals for the Mustangs were freshmen Grant Martens (eighth, 217), Trevor Guthrie (22nd, 227) and Bryce Greeley (24th, 229).
The Cal Poly women’s team was also in action, finishing with a team score of 956 strokes and a second-place finish behind UC Irvine.
The Anteaters took three of the top four individual spots at the six-team, 36-golfer invitational, with Jane Chin taking home top honors after a three-over-par 216.
Junior Stephanie Yocum was the top scorer for the Mustangs after a final-round 80, and a 54-hole total of 236, which put her in a fifth-place tie.
Also scoring for the Mustangs were junior Julia Heath (eighth, 237), senior Hannah Brabb (12th, 243), junior Maddy Fletcher (18th, 245) and senior Sasha McInnis (22nd, 252).
The women’s team also placed second in both the North Texas Women’s Classic and the Bulldog and Eagle Women’s Invitational.
The Mustangs men next play Oct. 27-28 in the Herb Wimberley Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico State, while the women return to action Oct. 27-29 in the Kent Youel Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii.
