A new grocery store is coming to San Luis Obispo late this August.
California Fresh Market will take over the old Haggen’s location on Foothill Boulevard, which has been vacant since late last year when Haggen’s filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy following an expansion from 18 to 164 stores in December 2014.
California Fresh Market is locally owned, and is an extension of two other stores located in Pismo Beach and Solvang.
According to a press release published to Facebook last month, California Fresh Market provides a “distinctive mix of gourmet foods added to value priced national brands, together with unique cuisine and beverages made in the kitchens of California Fresh.”
California Fresh Market is known for its in-store departments, according to the press release. For example, the deli serves anything from quick to-go sandwiches to full dinners. Additionally, the stores each have a fresh juice/coffee counter, fresh made sushi, a self-serve salad bar and a liquor department with a large selection of wine, spirits and craft beer. The meat department even cures and smokes its own bacon.
California Fresh Market offers both local organic and traditional farm harvested produce, as well as fruits and vegetables from around the world. The store also touts its privately labeled fresh-roasted coffee beans and fresh-brewed coffee, scratch baked breads, fresh-squeezed orange juice, Cabernet and Chardonnay wines, smoked tri-tip and chicken, handmade sausages, salsas and chips and more.
The three owners — Alfred Holzheu, Greg King and Sean Walwick — are all local as well. Holzheu is a Cal Poly alumnus, King grew up in Pismo Beach and Walwick has lived in the area for the past 18 years.
The release also stated that California Fresh Market has recently been awarded IGA’s Grocery Store of the Year in California out of the group’s 140 independent stores, and has also been recognized by San Luis Obispo’s New Times in the Best Grocery Store category.
