Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema was questioned at length today about Cal Poly during his weekly press conference. Here‘s the link to the transcript.
He heaped heavy praise on the Mustangs’ offense, in particular.
Among the most interesting quotes:
After last year’s Michigan/Appalachian State game, everybody has made certain things and written certain things about the two divisions playing one another, and Appalachian State went on to win that championship last year and, I believe, are ranked number two right ahead of Cal Poly right now. We know we’ve got a very good football team coming in here for senior day, and our kids, we tuned them into it last night just watching film and having them take a peek at Cal Poly as early as we could last night. We take the day off today, and we’ll start our preparation tomorrow.
…
I actually YouTubed them because I didn’t know a lot about their offense and, you know, just basically tried to get us the best competition at that time, and they’re more than that. They’re a tremendous football team that knows how to win football games.
…
Their offense is not similar to anything we’ve seen. They’re a very, very unique offense. They basically run a double-slot formation with two wings right on the hips of the tackles, kind of like a wing-T look. They do a variety of different option looks. They do a variety of mid-line option, veer option, quarterback follow plays. Their skill players, both senior wide receivers, but #11 is exceptional. They list him as 6’6, 227, I believe. He looks like he weighs about 250. He is thick. He’s aggressive. He goes up and gets the football.
I was just talking with several scouts. They project him as high as a first round draft pick. He’s a phenomenal football player. Their running backs have been very productive for them, but it’s speed that they attack you with. They try to keep everything fast paced and going a million different directions at any given time.
