The Cal Poly women’s tennis team started strong in the Big West Conference Tournament on Thursday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. For the second time this week, the No. 8 seed Mustangs defeated No. 9 seed UC Riverside 4-0.
The Mustangs’ doubles teams came out firing in a rematch of Cal Poly’s only conference win of the season. The No. 1 doubles team consisting of sophomore Louise Oxnevad and junior Dane Joubert won their match 8-1 before freshman Zoe Oedekerk and freshman Molly Reed won their match 8-0 in the No. 3 doubles spot.
Momentum carried over from the doubles matchup as Cal Poly won three straight-set singles matchups to claim the match. Oedekerk finished first, following her doubles win with a strong 6-1, 6-0 victory in the No. 5 slot.
Oedekerk’s teammates followed suit as Reed won her matchup 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 3 spot. Hannah Stone clinched the match for the Mustangs in a dominating fashion, winning 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 4 position. The remaining three singles matches went unfinished.
Cal Poly will face off against No. 2 seed UC Irvine in the tournament quarterfinals Friday at 3:00 p.m. The two teams last faced off on April 3, resulting in a 4-1 UC Irvine victory. In that match, Cal Poly’s only point came as they took two of three doubles matches.
