After a promising first round at the Big West Championships on Sunday, the Cal Poly women’s golf team concluded its season with a fifth-place finish at El Macero Country Club.
The Mustangs shot a 293, 5-over par, in the first round, just five strokes off the leader UC Davis, leaving Cal Poly in third place. However, the Mustangs were unable to maintain their strong play on Monday and Tuesday.
Round two saw Cal Poly falter tremendously, shooting a 315, 27-over par, tied for last place on the day out of the eight Big West teams. The round put the Mustangs back into fifth place, 40 strokes behind UC Davis, who remained in first place after a ridiculous round of 281, seven-under par.
Day three saw little improvement for Cal Poly. It mustered an 18-over par 306 on the final day, leaving the Mustangs with a three-day total of 914, good for fifth place overall.
UC Davis captured the overall title for the sixth straight year. The Aggies shot a three-round total of 858, 6-under par and 29 strokes ahead of second place finisher Hawaii. Long Beach State and UC Riverside finished tied for third, with both teams shooting 906 over the three days.
After the first round, the Mustangs had three golfers in the top 11. But by the end of the tournament, the highest Cal Poly finisher, junior Madison Hirsch, was in a tie for 14th. Hirsch finished with an 11-over par 227.
Cal Poly’s slew of freshman — Desiree Gillaspy, Jamie Harada, Jamie Binns and Sophia Bergland — all finished mid-pack.
Gillaspy finished tied for 20th with a score of 231. Harada and Binns ended tied for 22nd with a score of 232, while Bergland, Cal Poly’s day-one leader, finished tied for 28th with a 235.
