After the opening round of the Big West Championships at El Macero Country Club near Davis, California, the Cal Poly women’s golf team sits in third out of eight teams.
The Mustangs shot a four-person score of 293, or five over par. They sit five strokes back of five-time defending champion UC Davis, who shot a 288. Hawaii occupies the second spot after shooting a 290 on the day.
Freshman Sophia Bergland paced Cal Poly, carding a one-under 71, putting her in third place overall. UC Davis’ Blair Lewis sits in first place after her blazing four-under 68.
UC Davis, Hawaii and Cal Poly each had three golfers place in the top 10 individually.
Cal Poly freshmen Jamie Binns and Jamie Harada finished with a 73 and 74, respectively. Junior Madison Hirsch rounded out Cal Poly’s foursome, finishing in 11th place with a three-under 75.
Day two of the three-day competition is set to tee off at 9 a.m. Monday morning.
