Ten members of the Cal Poly track and field team participated in the NCAA West Regional Championships this past weekend. The competition took place in Fayetteville, Ark. at John McDonnell Field.
Six men and four women represented the Mustangs at the event, with the hopes of earning a place in the NCAA national championships hosted by Oregon next week.
No Cal Poly runner came closer to earning a place in the national competition than senior distance runner Sean Davidson.
Davidson placed 15th in the men’s 10,000-meter run, which took place on day one of the regional championships on Thursday. The top 12 athletes earn a national berth and Davidson’s time of 29 minutes, 47 seconds left him just 2.43 seconds shy of stretching his final season into the national spotlight.
Fellow senior Chris Frias placed 30th in the same event, with a time of 30:40. Then, to complete the men’s first day, senior Jamison Jordan placed 33rd overall in the 100-meter dash with a 10.64 mark.
The second day of the men’s competition saw senior David Williams finish 31st in the 110-meter hurdles, while sophomore Nick Woolf placed 46th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to complete the men’s participation in Arkansas.
For the women’s squad, sophomore Ashley Windsor placed 32nd overall in the women’s 800 on the first day.
Two Cal Poly women competed on day two. Sophomore Kendal Nielsen finished 35th in the women’s triple jump while fellow sophomore Ajah Love finished 37th in the women’s 200 meter.
On the final day of the championships, the final Cal Poly participant, Danielle Bryan, went out with a bang.
At the conclusion of the women’s high jump, Bryan finished in a seven-way tie for 11th — but only 12 competitors can qualify for the national championships. The tie forced a jump-off for the two remaining national spots, but resulted in elimination for Bryan as she finished 13th overall.
No Cal Poly competitors qualified for the national championship meet.
