The Cal Poly track and field team, which nears the close of the 2015 regular season, will head to Clovis, California, this Saturday to compete in the Bulldog Invitational hosted by Fresno State.
The Mustangs have only two regular season meets remaining until the Big West Conference Championships at UC Riverside on May 8.
Junior distance runner Ashley Windsor was recently named the Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week after her performance in the 1,500-meter run at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific. Windsor finished second in a race of 167, posting a career-best time of 4:20.34, the eighth-best time in Cal Poly history. This is the second event in her career that Windsor has recorded a top-10 time in program history, the other being the 800-meter.
Windsor’s time in the 1,500-meter is ranked first in the Big West Conference this year and 24th nationally.
The same night of competition, junior Nick Woolf finished 21st out of 210 runners in the 1,500-meter on the men’s side. Woolf has also been one of the Mustangs’ top competitors, posting several personal records this season for numerous events. At the Stanford Invitational, where 109 universities competed, Woolf won his section in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing seven seconds faster than his previous best, grabbing a 8:48.91 time. Woolf increased his standing in school history to eighth.
Another standout performance this season was back at the UCLA Legends Invitational, where freshman Kiely Osby earned a second-place mark in the shot put on her fourth attempt. With a 47-foot, 8.5-inch toss, Osby moved up to fifth place in Cal Poly history for that event.
At the same meet, all three Cal Poly triple jump competitors won their respective heats. Junior Kendal Nielson, sophomore Ricky Strehlow and junior Jirael Hipol were the athletes who collectively swept the event for the Legends Invitational.
The Bulldog Invitational kicks off at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
