Technologically challenged? Have no fear, Cal Poly is here.
Local K-12 teachers and Cal Poly students are invited to campus on Feb. 8 for the Central Coast Teacher Technology Challenge Day. Students will join Cal Poly faculty and teaching credential students who will lead presentations and workshops centered around integrating technology into Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards. These standards will help teachers meet new curriculum reforms.
The challenge idea spawned from Sonoma State University, which integrated it as part of its digital ambassador program. That program helped students share resources and ideas with teachers in a competitive setting.
Special guest speakers will include Holly Clark, a Google-certified teacher and Beverly Young, an assessment expert from the CSU chancellor’s office. Teachers who are using technology in their classrooms will also make presentations.
Warren Watkins, information services director for the school of education, said that teachers will put on workshops for other teachers.
Workshops offered will discuss topics such as iPads in the classroom and social media. For those who are new to such technology, a beginner session will be offered and will focus on various devices.
“It is the first time we are having an event like this here,” Watkins said.
This event asks attendees to bring their own devices. By bringing personal technology, guests will be able to glean the most out of all the hands-on workshop sessions.
Cal Poly campus will provide guest wi-fi.
“I will be working, running around making sure everyone can connect to wi-fi,” Watkins said.
The event will be held on campus from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tickets for Computer Using Educators members are $30 and general admission is $45.
Guest speakers will include Holly Clark, a Google-certified teacher and Beverley Young, an assessment expert from the California State University chancellor’s office.
