Physics senior Jacob Van Staaveren died today after colliding with a truck while skateboarding in San Luis Obispo, according to San Luis Obispo Police Department (SLOPD) lieutenant Bill Proll.
Van Staaveren was skateboarding across the intersection of Mill and Grove streets when he collided with a truck Wednesday afternoon, according to a SLOPD press release.
Van Staaveren was heading down Grove Street, which has a steep incline, and passed through the stop sign at the intersection without stopping, according to the release. He then struck the driver’s side door of a pickup truck, sustaining critical injuries, according to SLOPD.
He was not wearing a helmet, according to the release.
Officials responded to the call at 4:40 p.m., and Van Staaveren was transported to Sierra Vista Regional Hospital where he died today from his injuries, Proll said.
