Original post: After weeks of speculation, the NCAA made it official on Sunday night — the Cal Poly baseball team will host a regional for the first time in school history.
It will mark the third time the program has made it to the regional round of the NCAA Tournament. The Mustangs won one game at the Los Angeles Regional last season and were eliminated in two games in the Tempe Regional in 2009.
The NCAA Tournament consists of 16 regional sites where four teams compete in a double-elimination tournament. The winner of the regional moves on to a Super Regional, a three-game series against another regional winner. The eight Super Regional victors advance to for the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., where the teams are split into four-team brackets and compete in another double-elimination round. The winners of those brackets move on to a three-game series to decide the national champion.
Cal Poly finished the year 45-10 overall — its highest single-season win total in school history — and 19-5 in Big West play to earn the conference’s automatic bid to the postseason.
The full 64-team field, including the three teams headed to San Luis Obispo for regional play, will be announced on Monday at 9 a.m. on ESPNU.
The dates for regionals are May 30 through June 1 and June 2, if necessary. The first game will played at 1 p.m. on Friday.
Individual game tickets will go on sale on Thursday, May 29 at 9 a.m with reserved seats costing $20, $15 for general admission (adults) seats and $13 for general admission (Cal Poly students, youth 2-13 and seniors 60 and over.)
