Cal Poly recorded its largest applicant pool in university history for Fall 2014, with nearly 44,000 freshman applications received and 8,000 transfer applications.
Undergraduate applications increased roughly 10 percent from last year, Associate Vice Provost for Enrollment and Marketing James Maraviglia said.
According to a trend synopsis compiled by Maraviglia, freshman applications have more than doubled since 2000 and more than quadrupled since Fall 1993. Transfer applicants have increased by 75 percent in the past decade.
Approximately 5,600 enrollment spaces are going to be available for new students, Maraviglia said.
“There was a bit of a surprise in the numbers … you can only predict so much,” he said. “But we did plan to increase (applicants).”
Clarification: This article previously stated nearly 44,000 students applied to Cal Poly for Fall 2014. That number is the total freshman applications — there were also 7,868 transfer applications.
