The Cal Poly women’s soccer team (4-2-5) concluded its nonconference schedule with a 1-1 draw against Pepperdine on Sunday. Of the Mustangs’ ties this season, three have come against preseason Top 25 nationally ranked teams, finishing in a 0-0 tie against No. 13 Cal, a 1-1 tie against No. 6 BYU and a 1-1 tie against No. 10 Pepperdine.
In the 14th minute, senior forward Elise Krieghoff bypassed two of Pepperdine’s defenders with an overhead pass to sophomore forward McKenzie Flood, whose shot on goal narrowly missed over the crossbar.
The Mustangs capitalized on an opportunity to score in the 29th minute when freshman Chelsea Barry launched a pass to Krieghoff over the middle, leading to Krieghoff’s third goal of the year. Krieghoff is now just one goal away from 50 career goals.
In the 47th minute of the game, Pepperdine’s Emily Tanaka scored the equalizer with a rebound from a previous shot on goal.
False hope came for the Mustangs during the 65th minute, as freshman Caitlyn Kreutz’s shot was whistled offsides.
The Mustangs continued to fight with shots on goal from junior forward Megan Abutin in the 74th minute and Krieghoff in the 87th and 95th minutes, all which were saved by Pepperdine goalkeeper Hannah Seabert.
An opportunity came for the Waves to clinch the game in the 100th minute, but an impressive save by senior goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti kept the game to a 1-1 draw after double overtime.
Cal Poly has only lost to two teams this season, both who were ranked No. 2 in the nation at the time of the game, losing 2-0 to Virginia and 1-0 to Stanford.
The Mustangs will open Big West Conference play at UC Davis (7-3-1) on Thursday at 4 p.m.
