San Luis Obispo Fire Department responded to a brush fire on the hills between VG Cafe, Fremont Hall and Sierra Madre Tower 1 at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Monday night, Cal Fire Capt. April Mangels said.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, Mangels said.
In response to the fire, Fremont and Sierra Madre Towers 1 and 0 were evacuated, University Police Department (UPD) officials said.
No one was hurt and there was no damage to any nearby buildings, UPD Officer Jason Leclair said. The only assessable damage was on the small area of hill where the fire began.
Leclair said the flames were at least 30 feet high by the time UPD arrived at the scene.
Recreations, parks and tourism administration freshman Shawna Mcdonough and business administration freshman Charlotte Hembree, who both live in Sierra Madre Tower 1, saw the fire.
The women realized there was a fire outside their window when a friend jumped out of his room and began yelling, “Fire!” They immediately went outside to see the flames.
The flames were relatively large, but calmed down in a matter of minutes, Hembree said.
When the women returned to Sierra Madre, the resident advisers had evacuated the building.
Residents were allowed back into their halls after the fire was extinguished at approximately 11 p.m.
Mangels said the Cal Fire team is still “suspicious in nature” about how the brush fire started.
