A new quarter means new classes, a new season and new trends. Update your wardrobe this spring with the top trends from the spring/summer 2014 runways.
From crop tops to wide-leg trousers, this spring is all about daring to try something new. Start spring by cleaning your closet, and fill it with some of this season’s hottest trends.
Crop tops and jackets
The beloved-yet-hated trend has made its point loud and clear: It’s here to stay. For those who are reluctant to try crop tops, there’s good news. The midriff-baring trend can easily be incorporated into your spring and summer wardrobe.
For a class-appropriate crop top look, pair a crop top with high-waisted bottoms such as a skirt or pants. Showing off just a hint of skin is subtle enough for class.
Jackets have also been cropped this spring, and they’re more stylish than ever. The cropped jacket features a boxy and structured silhouette that pairs easily over a dress for chilly mornings and work-ready outfits. You’ll have no problem finding a favorite, thanks to the many prints and textures the cropped jacket comes in.
Pastels
Lighten up a bit this spring with pastels and neutrals. Beautiful combinations of soft hues were sprinkled throughout designs on the spring runways. Choose your favorite pastel and go crazy, or add contrast to your outfit by pairing pastels with darker colors.
Sheer details
Sheer is the new lace. Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein and 3.1 Phillip Lim were among the many fashion houses that incorporated the revealing fabric into their designs. Add some sheer to your wardrobe with detailing in dresses or skirts or a simple sheer-paneled top.
The bucket bag (aka spring’s it-bag)
It may sound anything but trendy, but this spring’s bucket bags are definitely the it-bag of the season. Bucket bags are both roomy and simple, which makes them perfect to tote around anywhere and everywhere. Find your favorite bucket bag in leather, knits and details that make a statement.
The boxy top or shift blouse
Call it what you will, but the shift blouse is a classic top you need in your closet. While roomy in the sleeves, the top is structured in the bodice. A shift blouse pairs perfectly with just about anything, so there’s no going wrong with this trend.
Style tip: Balance out the structure of your shift blouse with delicate accessories.
The wide-leg trouser
Forget the sweats and yoga pants. The wide-leg trouser is your new go-to for billowy pants that are as comfortable as they are trendy.
The wide-leg trouser is comfortable enough to lounge in and chic enough to wear outside with your favorite top and pair of heels or flats.
Choose a pant with a fun print and pair it with a more tailored top to avoid looking like you just stepped out of bed. Not too fond of the wide-legged pant? Try loose trousers that cinch at the ankles.
Tea-length skirts
There is nothing more ladylike than a skirt with a hemline that hits right at mid-calf. Pair a tea-length skirt with a fairly fitted top to balance out the length and fullness of the skirt. Adding a cropped jacket to the mix makes for a stylish outfit for those chilly mornings.
For the men
Remember this spring is all about taking risks, so try something outside of your comfort zone.
The spring/summer 2014 runways were filled with beautiful blues and bold prints such as dark tropical florals (like your typical Hawaiian shirt, but bolder). Camouflage also decided to make a comeback this spring. To make your casual outfit look more put together, pick up this spring’s must-have jacket: the double-breasted blazer.
Try something different and have fun this season. Who knows, you might just find a new trend that looks amazing on you. Happy shopping and happy spring!
