The Cal Poly baseball team lost its first series of the year this weekend as the Mustangs dropped a 1-0 decision to Long Beach State in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.
For the second straight year, Cal Poly (36-7, 12-3 Big West) won Friday’s opener but lost the final two games of the series to the Dirtbags. Saturday and Sunday’s losses by the Mustangs mark the first time this year that they’ve dropped back-to-back games.
It also marked the fourth straight year Cal Poly has lost a series to Long Beach State.
Cal Poly also dropped out of first place in the conference standings as UC Irvine swept UC Davis over the weekend and moved into first.
Even bigger losses for the Mustangs were those of sophomore pitcher Casey Bloomquist and sophomore second baseman Mark Mathias to leg injuries. The extent of their injuries is unknown.
Bloomquist earned his first loss of the year, as he allowed seven hits and one unearned run.
Cal Poly managed just two hits, singles by sophomore shortstop Peter Van Gansen and senior catcher Chris Hoo in the fifth inning.
Cal Poly continues its seven-game road trip with a midweek game at Pepperdine (30-9) on Tuesday.
