Sunday afternoon was the perfect day for the Mustangs to wrap up a 12-game home stand and three-game sweep of University of San Francisco in Baggett Stadium.
After a weekend full of rain and shifting game schedules, the baseball team faced the Dons for the final game of the series, playing under the sun in ideal 60-degree weather and winning 7-6.
San Francisco opened up the game by striking out twice in the top of the first inning.
Sophomore left fielder Josh George scored in the first inning on a single by true freshman shortstop Kyle Marinconz.
The game slowed down until the third inning when senior right fielder John Schuknecht doubled down the left field line, eventually advancing to third base and scoring, giving the Mustangs a 3-0 lead.
USF remained scoreless until it tied the game at three in the fifth inning.
Schuknecht hit his second home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning, extending the Mustangs’ lead to 6-3. The Mustangs took a 7-4 lead when George scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Mustangs held onto their lead despite the Dons scoring two runs in the top of the ninth inning.
This game marks the end of Cal Poly’s 12-game homestand. The Mustangs will travel for their first away game of the season on Tuesday, facing Pepperdine at Eddy D. Field Stadium at 2 p.m.
