Ryan ChartrandA Cal Poly student gave birth to a baby girl in the third-floor bathroom of Fremont Hall Sunday afternoon.
University Police officers were the first of any medical aid to respond, since 911 calls from campus usually get dispatched to UPD, police chief Bill Watton said.
“When the officers arrived, the baby was already delivered and was wrapped in a towel. The mother was sitting holding the baby and waiting for assistance,” he said.
Other students were in the bathroom with the woman when police arrived around 4:30 p.m. The mother’s name has not been released by police or the university, and she has not been confirmed as living in the residence halls.
UPD called an ambulance and the mother and child were taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, Watton said.
In medical aid cases, police officers make sure there is nothing life threatening and then wait for paramedics before doing anything, he said.
“As far as we know, both mother and baby are doing fine.”
