Apple Computers Inc. has its eyes set on bringing a corporate retail store to downtown San Luis Obispo with aspirations to open in time for the holidays.

What was once Men’s Express located at 877 Higuera St., on the corner of Morro Street, could soon become the future home of an Apple retail store.

Mom n' pop overshadowed by mass consumerism

Farmer’s Market is one of my favorite events in San Luis Obispo. It’s definitely the best place in town to get fresh produce, and the local music and barbecued food are amazing. But best of all, it’s the one night a week when all of San Luis Obispo shuts down at an actually reasonable hour.

Amtrak on the fast track to slow service

When my mom left me standing at the corner of my new dorm at Cal Poly she bid farewell with the knowledge that I would soon be home to visit via the “comfortable and dependable” Amtrak services that run from San Luis Obispo to Orange County.

I soon learned that “comfortable and dependable” to the people at Amtrak is more of a guideline similar to the “pirates’ code” in Pirates of the Caribbean.

'Vice' up your life this summer at the movies

If you’re expecting to see alligators, one-piece bathing suits and loafers with no socks, check out Spike TV at 3 a.m. If you want to see a Ferrari F430, no bathing suits and an excellent filmmaker at his best, go see “Miami Vice.”

Michael Mann, who was the executive producer for the TV show “Miami Vice” (1984-1989), provides an update to the show that enabled Don Johnson to survive the likes of an underrated singing career and Melanie Griffith.

'John Tucker' filled with laughs and teen angst

“John Tucker Must Die” is the perfect combination of romance and comedy. The tale of three high school girls seeking revenge on a popular jock will be sure to make everyone laugh.

The tale begins with basketball captain John Tucker (Jesse Metcalfe) who is dating three girls, all from different social groups.

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride

About a month ago, I stood behind one of my best childhood friends (bridesmaid bouquet and emergency tissues in hand) and watched her marry the man of her dreams. A little more than nine months ago, I did the same thing for one of my sorority sisters. And I still have at least three more weddings to go to this year.

Lionsgate's 'Descent'; literally

“The Descent” should have never come to America (at least not in its “tweaked” form). If anything, it’s Lionsgate Films’ way of describing how well they did on their past year’s report card; a depressing descent into following the standard horror formula and forgetting to get creative.

Bush's veto shows Republican disunity

Defying the wishes of a majority of Americans and their representatives, President George W. Bush vetoed a bill allowing federal money to go to embryonic stem cell research. Although this veto was devastating to the millions who are familiar with the pain associated with Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, cancer, and spinal injuries, the veto was also indicative of the palpable disunity present in the GOP.

Friends remember life of Cal Poly student

Richard Spencer Wood planned to graduate from Cal Poly winter quarter with degrees in history and political science. But his plans were cut short.

Wood, 22, was found dead on July 22 in Avila Beach after attending the 311 concert the night before.

“He was a short guy but he was so tall in terms of his personality,” said AJ Rikli, an environmental engineering junior and Wood’s fraternity brother.

Identity theft becomes concern for 3,000 students

More than 3,000 students’ identities are at risk of being stolen after a professor’s laptop, which contained personal information of past students, was taken last month.

John Mottmann, a physics professor, reported on July 5 that his home in San Luis Obispo had been broken into two days earlier and his laptop was missing.

Battle to stop global warming not hopeless

The year is 2050. The number of deaths per year has more than doubled within the last 44 years and more than a million species worldwide have been driven to extinction. The ice has completely melted in the Arctic Ocean and the world is engulfed in frequent heat waves, droughts and wildfires.
