Carving up the coast

Some students enjoy road trips or relaxing family vacations over their summer break. But Cal Poly student Matt Ishler has a different idea of summer traveling.

Ishler, a kinesiology junior, skateboarded from San Luis Obispo to his hometown of Santa Monica in three days, a 230-mile-long journey.

Award given to professor for dairy research

For most of us, drinking a glass of milk is just that, sipping down milk. The in-depth thoughts about the milk and its contents never really cross the mind unless that mind belongs to professor Phil Tong.

Tong, director of the Dairy Products Technology Center, has been in the dairy industry for over 20 years, and some of his recent work has earned him an International Dairy Foods Association Research Award.

Cable news resembles tabloids, not journalism

Tonight on cable news: a bunch of stuff you really don’t need to know.

So that may not seem like a breaking story, but it’s certainly becoming more and more true.

With about 1,056 minutes to fill every day, cable’s three main news channels – CNN, Fox and MSNBC – have evolved into entertainment broadcasts rather than informative sources.

It’s a vicious cycle: Local businesses depend on students to buy their products and students depend on the businesses for income. But when gas prices go up and students go home for the summer, businesses are scrambling to fill the void.

Ed Dutton Jr. and his wife Ybonne Dutton didn’t want to raise their prices at Buck Wild on Foothill Boulevard, but they had no choice.

Mustangs happy to be in gear

Blocking and tackling was a bit louder Aug. 14 when the Cal Poly football team practiced in full pads for the first time during training camp.

Head coach Rich Ellerson said the Mustangs had already been doing roughly 80 percent of the drills seen during Monday’s practice, which lasted nearly three hours at the track and field facility.

Tom Petty's great new 'Companion'

Tom Petty’s new album “Highway Companion” is a smooth blend of toe-tapping music and sing-along vocals. Listeners will find themselves singing the lyrics after hearing the album only once.

The third album of Petty’s solo career is a perfect combination of slow and upbeat songs.

Velvet Rope wine guide to success

I was not much of a wine drinker until lately. The other night I felt the urge to just curl up on the couch with a bottle of vino and watch a little television.

My experimentation with sophistication began with a bottle of pinot noir. My show of choice: college rodeo.
