YouTube overrun with nonsense

Since YouTube now has $1.65 billion and Google making it look that much more important, it’s about time someone rid the Earth of the world’s most disturbing fad; video blogging.

I can spend hours perusing the endless viral media on YouTube, but when it comes to watching video blogging, my entire body shuts off and I feel like I’m trapped in a mental hospital with clones of Joel Siegel blocking every exit.

Taking the SLO life into slow motion

“Please, keep in mind that Spaniards have a “go with the flow” mentality, things will get done when they get done. So if you have to wait awhile, for whatever it may be, do not think it is because you are a foreigner. Just take it easy. Relax.”

The 200 of us waiting to start our lives in Barcelona all kind of laughed and pretended to understand what the director of our program was talking about in her last few words of orientation.

Congresswoman on campus

Incumbent Congresswoman Lois Capps paid a visit to the Cal Poly campus Tuesday. The democrat who represents California’s 23rd Congressional district (which includes portions of Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties) is campaigning for re-election in November’s elections.

Poly one of five safest schools in CSU system

Cal Poly is one of the safest state universities in California, University Police Chief Bill Watton said a recent crime statistics report shows.

The report, which details arrests made on-and-off campus from 2003 to 2005, shows that most arrests were made for misdemeanor liquor and drug law violations.

Congressmen gone wild

What is going on with congressional Republicans nowadays? In less than one year’s time four highly esteemed Republicans have had to resign because of evidence of serious misconduct.

From the power grabs of Tom DeLay (R), to the greediness of Duke Cunningham (R) and Bob Ney (R), to the now widely publicized sexual advances of Mark Foley (R) towards teenagers, the Republicans appear to be doing their best to live up to the “Culture of Corruption” label.

Poly water ski team to make history

Since resurfacing in 2003, the Cal Poly water ski club team has not yet been to the prestigious National Collegiate Water Ski Association Nationals.

That will change this weekend when the Mustangs head to Rio Linda, Calif., for nationals, which will be hosted by Sacramento State.

18 months in jail too many for reporters

Call me crazy, but I think there are more important things in life than baseball.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m a baseball fanatic. I love everything about it, the nuances, subtleties and even the waiting. Apparently, the people in Washington, D.C. are even bigger fans.

Frankly Speaking

Cal Poly football fans in excess of 8,400 flocked to Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Saturday night. That means more than 8,400 displaced fans this weekend, as fans will have to endure a bye week.

James Noble will not fake any linebackers out of their shoes, Kyle Shotwell will not stick any opposing running backs into a grass grave and there will be no fans lining up outside the stadium and on the lawns surrounding the field trying to catch a glimpse of the action.

Wiesel's dark 'Night' an exceptional read

Imagine surviving a night so horrifying that it causes you to lose your very faith in God. Envision yourself arriving by train at Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944, confronted by flames from the crematorium and the potent smell of burning flesh.

For author Elie Wiesel, a Jew from Transylvania, traumatic memories of Auschwitz are a reality.

Poly club attempts to raise respect

Raise the Respect, a global outreach group on campus, is making an effort today to raise awareness as well as provide a forum for students to participate in “Peace within Reach: National Northern Uganda Lobby Day” in order to help curb conflict in that region.

Classes and dating a balancing act

Welcome back, everyone.

It’s fall – autumn, if you want to sound fancy. School’s back in swing, for better or for worse. For the freshman wandering about the north end of campus, congrats on getting in to this lovely institution we call Cal Poly; you’ll get used to it.
