NCAA volleyball tourney an event to see

Are all kills created equal? If you’ve seen Cal Poly outside hitter Kylie Atherstone play, the answer is obvious.

It all starts as an opposing player tries to smash the ball past the Cal Poly volleyball team’s defense. Then libero Kristin Jackson will effortlessly dig the ball to the front line where setter Chelsea Hayes places a perfect pass into the air on the left side of the net.

Anderson Cooper's journey of survival

“I was ten when my father died,” Anderson Cooper wrote to open his new book. “Before that moment, that slap of silence that reset the clock, I can’t remember much. There are some things, of course – fractals, shards of memory, sharp as broken glass.”

Cooper is distinguished by his piercing blue eyes, his silvered hair, and his globetrotting reporting on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360ยง.

A pirate's life for she

Does the term “female pirate” call to mind Keira Knightly standing on a beach jumping up and down and screaming “Stop it!” at a dueling Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom? If so, it’s time to get your hands on a copy of “She Captains” by Joan Druett. It’s no secret that pirates are currently a hot topic, but aside from the ever-popular pirate wenches, the phenomena is strongly male-focused.

Textbook prices to increase 237 percent

Editor’s note: The Bunion is fake news. Period. SAN LUIS OBISPO – Store clerks at El Corral Bookstore were solemn on Sunday as they put up signs announcing a 237 percent price increase on textbooks, effective this winter quarter 2007. Having no ladders due to budget problems, the clerks resorted to standing on each other’s backs in acrobatic pyramid fashion to hang signs up high enough, where they hoped enraged students would be unable to tear them to pieces in protest, just so long as they did not bring any ladders of their own.

Breaking up is hard to do

Last week we talked about a phenomenon called “turkey droppings”: the unfortunate Thanksgiving-season demise of many long-distance relationships (LDRs).

As steadfastly optimistic as I am that relationships can work, as a surveyor of relationships, one must remove the rose-colored glasses every so often.

Former professor finally fills ambassador position

After minor complications, Cal Poly social sciences professor Maliha Zulfacar, a native of Afghanistan who has actively spent her summers aiding the rebuilding of the country, has finally assumed her role as Afghanistan’s ambassador to Germany.

Zulfacar, who taught classes about global ethnic conflict and geopolitics during the academic year, had left Cal Poly bound for Afghanistan and then Germany on Sept.

Poly Rep with a passion

“Who the heck are the people on the Cal Poly Web site?” So many people wonder this as they go the home page and just move on, never knowing the images are of Poly Reps. Lana Smith took this and turned it into a passion.

Now, Smith, a psychology senior, is president of Poly Reps.

Poly football team returns at least 12 starters, but knows offense must improve in 2007

After a 55-0 win over Savannah State in their Senior Day season finale Nov. 18, Cal Poly football players – both on the way out and returning – predicted a bright future for the program. Coming off a 7-4 season, the Mustangs can return up to seven players on offense and five on defense who started Nov.

I-AA to NFL: A growing trend

Don’t look now, but a former Division I-AA football player is a darkhorse candidate for NFL MVP honors, although the award should undoubtedly go to San Diego running back LaDainian Tomlinson.

You might have seen him tie a Dallas Cowboys franchise record with five touchdown passes on Thanksgiving Day.

Both Mustang soccer teams hope youth will be served in 2007

Cal Poly’s women’s soccer team came within one game of reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004 this season, but fell short against Cal State Fullerton in the Big West Conference title game. The Mustangs (10-7-3, 3-1-3) finished fourth in the conference.

A review a long time coming

I can’t really explain why this review has gotten put off for so long. Port O’Brien’s new EP “Nowhere to Run” has been hovering around the station and the town in general for a little while. During that time, I’ve seen them play twice. Still, the album only just found its way over to me sometime this week when I found it sitting on a cabinet in the station.
