Poly's UU Plaza slated for renovation

The 1970s were a time of innovation; the decade spawned Star Wars and saw the popularization of bell bottoms, after all. But not everything fashioned in the ’70s was quite as auspicious: Cal Poly’s University Union Plaza, for example. The plaza, originally built to allow students a place to mingle and relax, is now mostly known for its abundance of concrete and lack of landscaping.

Skill, speed shine in football signings

Ten starters will return on offense next season for the Cal Poly football team, an extremely rare positive directly around the corner, but also a glaring shortcoming soon afterward.

The Mustangs took steps to remedy the looming dwindling of their depth chart by securing national letters of intent from 16 players, most of them at skill positions, Cal Poly head coach Rich Ellerson announced Wednesday.

Compilation an unoriginal lovely meltdown

I want to get something out of the way before I start this review. The new Modular Records compilation, a DJ set entitled “Leave Them All Behind 2,” does nothing surprising. It doesn’t break any new boundaries or go into experimental territory. We don’t get a Girl Talk mega-mix or Diplo crate-digging or Clipse beat-stealing mixtape territory.

Four internationally diverse guitarists will perform tonight at the Performing Arts Center as part of the International Guitar Night tour. Billed as “the longest-running mobile guitar festival in North America,” the International Guitar Night tour was founded in 1995 by San Francisco native Brian Gore.

Graphic novel delves into Iranian Revolution

Graphic novels are often passed over by traditional readers who prefer prose over pictures. However, from French writer Marjane Satrapi comes a comic that has attracted a whole new audience.

Through simple black and white picture boxes, “Persepolis” tells the story of a young girl growing up during the Islamic Revolution in Iran.

Whiten likely out for season

Dawin Whiten, a starting guard for the Cal Poly men’s basketball team, will likely miss the rest of the season due to foot injuries, Cal Poly head coach Kevin Bromley said Monday.

The senior, who has started 18 of the Mustangs’ 20 games this season, is suffering from plantar fasciitis in his right foot and may require surgery soon, Bromley said.

Foy story gets better and better

Love may mean nothing to tennis players the world over, but as one Cal Poly player knows, that doesn’t mean the game is the same everywhere you play.

Robert Foy is enjoying his second year on the Cal Poly men’s tennis team, thousands of miles away from his hometown of Wellington, New Zealand, but at least this year, he knows more of what he’s up against on the court.

A Giant lesson in humility

By the time the dust had settled, and Bill Belichick had continued to show his classlessness by abandoning his team before the final play, the New York Giants had exposed the New England Patriots for what they were: the perfect fraud. Everything was pointing toward a historic Patriots victory.
