Top football signing chose Cal Poly over Pac-10, SEC

Rich Ellerson didn’t want to single anyone out. The Cal Poly head football coach hesitated, shifted his weight and tried to pick his words carefully. But in the end, he couldn’t resist voicing the obvious: Quentin Greenlaw stands out.

“As heavily recruited as Quentin was, that meant a lot to us,” said Ellerson, asked if any one or two of the 16 signings the program announced Wednesday were particularly sought after.

Dancing like the stars at the Mustang Ball

This was no college house party, but things got hot and heavy on the dance floor nonetheless, as long legs and little red dresses went flying across the floor at the second annual Mustang Ball.

Softball team stuns No. 2 Texas A&M

The Cal Poly softball team went 2-3 at the Cathedral City Kick Off in Palm Springs over the weekend, bookending its five outings with victories over No. 2 Texas A&M on Friday and New Mexico State on Sunday.

In the season-opening 5-1 win over the Aggies at Big League Dreams Sports Park, sophomore pitcher Helen Peña went the distance, allowing her only run in the last inning.

Still sizzling from the success of last year’s competition, the Cal Poly Ballroom Dance Club is hosting its second annual Mustang Ball dance competition Saturday.

The dance floor is expected to heat up with both first-time nerves and seasoned talent as the event has now expanded to six different levels of competitions, ranging from newcomer to open-level.

Women's tennis team opens Big West play

The Cal Poly women’s tennis team will play its first Big West Conference dual matches of the season this weekend, visiting UC Irvine at 11 a.m. Saturday and Cal State Fullerton at 10 a.m. Sunday. “It’s going to be really competitive against those two teams,” Mustangs head coach Hugh Bream said.

Environmentalist Winona LaDuke to speak

In the early ’90s, Time Magazine nominated her as one of America’s 50 most promising leaders under the age of 40. Since then she has worked as a board member for Greenpeace USA and ran as Ralph Nader’s vice president in 1996.

Environmentalist, feminist and internationally-known Winona LaDuke will be the spotlight speaker for the Provocative Perspectives series with a talk entitled: “A New American Identity for the Millennium” Thursday morning on campus.

Surfriders: just trying to make a difference

From recent sewage spills in Morro Bay to unmanaged water testing in Pismo Beach, local surfers and beach goers are worried about the current state of our oceans.

At Cal Poly, a group who cares about these issues is now voicing their concerns in the officially chartered sub-chapter of the San Luis Bay Surfrider Foundation.
