Poly could host state football championships

Cal Poly is now among five candidates being seriously considered to host five high school football state championship games over a weekend in December, a California Interscholastic Federation official said Tuesday. On-campus Alex G. Spanos Stadium would serve as the San Luis Obispo venue for the 2008 CIF State Football Championship Bowl Games, and is one of seven sites still officially being evaluated.

Eclectic folk-rock band plays for Malawi

Several thousand miles away, people are forced to carry family members on their backs, and others who can’t walk find themselves relegated to crawling. It may seem as if the more than 130,000 physically disabled people of Malawi, Africa are too far away to help directly, but an upcoming concert in San Luis Obispo will provide an opportunity for locals to do something about their plight.

“You may think you’re on your own in the dorms since your parents aren’t around, but you aren’t really free until you move off campus,” mechanical engineering senior Ryan Boughey said.

Housing shake-up

Off-campus student housing officials said it is too early to tell how the new facilities at Cal Poly will change the demand for student housing in the area.

Tim Kershner, manager of Stenner Glen and local real estate broker, said since Cal Poly cancelled summer school classes for incoming freshmen, they will have to wait to see how many students Cal Poly will enroll in the fall.

Fire forces students out of home

It looks like a pathetic yard sale. There are soot-covered and charred objects scattered on the driveway and clothing draped on the fence, with more and more loads of stuff coming out each minute carried by sooty college students.

At around 6 a.m. Monday morning, four Cal Poly students escaped out of 381 Pismo St.
