Mustangs resume Big West play

At the start of the week, Larry Lee, head coach of the Cal Poly baseball team, wasn’t willing to hit the panic button.

Even though his Mustangs had fallen to 1-5 in Big West Conference play, he said Monday it wasn’t too late to turn things around. He may have been right.

Pac-10 signees to play in prep game

A handful of high school boys basketball stars headed to the Pac-10 Conference, one bound for Cal Poly and several others also on their way to Division I programs, will display their talents at Mott Gym on Sunday.

“This is a great opportunity to get a lot of this year’s standouts together for our local community that enjoys watching basketball, and to acknowledge them for their abilities as well as their commitments to respective programs,” game director Jon Sun said.

Beyond the sidewalk

There will be something for everyone this Sunday at the Performing Arts Center, where the Civic Ballet of San Luis Obispo will perform two very different ballets: one classical, one contemporary.

The local company will first perform a ballet based on William Shakespeare’s classic comedy of errors “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Hip Hop Congress enlightens, entertains

Hip-hop may seem like just spoken words with a beat, but it goes far beyond that, if you ask the Cal Poly chapter of Hip Hop Congress.

Not only does it strive to cultivate the original four elements of hip-hop – breakdancing, graffiti artistry, deejaying and, of course, emceeing – but it also seeks to break down misperceptions and unite people.

Fraternity honors late professor

Sixteen years ago, the Cal Poly community lost a beloved architect, artist and professor.

California has the highest prices in the United States, and three of its 15 highest-priced stations are located on the Central Coast, according to californiagasprices.

Poly erupts in seventh for win in Malibu

After losing several late leads while dropping 10 of 12 games, the Cal Poly baseball team turned the tables Tuesday afternoon.

The Mustangs, who trailed Pepperdine 5-3 heading into the seventh inning at Eddy D. Field Stadium, reeled off six consecutive runs to regain the lead on their way to a 10-5, non-conference win in Malibu and snapping a four-game losing skid.

Women's golf takes another tournament

Trailing by two strokes after Monday, the Cal Poly women’s golf team shot a tournament-best 295 Tuesday to edge runner-up and host Cal State Northridge by seven in the nine-team Matador Spring Invitational at the Tierra Rejada Golf Course in Moorpark.

The Mustangs finished with a 36-hole, 607 total on the 6,018-yard, par-72 layout to capture their 10th tournament championship in the eight-year history of the program, and their second this season.

A look at addiction from two angles

Recent releases “Beautiful Boy” and “Tweak” explore the experiences of a young man addicted to crystal meth from two distinct angles: “Tweak” is written by 21-year-old Nic Sheff, an addict himself, while “Beautiful Boy” is penned by his father, journalist David Sheff, who watched his son struggle for many years.

Youthful defense matures in spring game

From a superficial standpoint, the comparison is almost too obvious to resist. Time and again during Saturday’s annual Cal Poly spring football game, No. 17 shot into the backfield and made tackle after tackle, repeatedly disrupting opposing rushing attempts.

Cal Poly baseball looks to get back on track

Having lost 10 of 12, the Cal Poly baseball team will try to get back in the win column in a non-conference game against Pepperdine at 3 p.m. today in Eddy D. Field Stadium in Malibu.

Junior southpaw Jared Eskew (1-1, 2.92 ERA) will start for the Mustangs (9-17, 1-5 Big West Conference), who were swept over the weekend at Cal State Northridge.
