It might seem Cal Poly men’s soccer head coach Paul Holocher would have reason to fret. After all, the Mustangs entered the year with their first-ever preseason top-25 ranking – No. 24 by College Soccer News – but have since been relegated to the “others receiving votes” category.

Utah holds off hard-charging Mustangs

A barrage of second-half shots was in vain for the Cal Poly women’s soccer team in a 1-0 loss to Utah on Sunday. The Mustangs (5-6) outshot Utah 13-4 in the second half but were unable to score despite several close chances.

“We had the ball in their half (the whole second half); they were on their heels,” Cal Poly forward Ashley Vallis said.

For the second time in as many games, the Cal Poly men’s soccer team went to double overtime. Unlike Wednesday night, though, when the Mustangs were able to score in the 103rd minute to edge Cal State Bakersfield for a 3-2 win, they couldn’t overcome a stalwart defensive stand Sunday afternoon at Sacramento State, leaving Hornet Soccer Field with a 1-1 tie.
