California's rebel plumbers

Looks like not all plumbers are simply average Joes (sorry, couldn’t help myself). You don’t need to be a licensed pipe technician to learn how to save thousands of gallons of water a year and hundreds of dollars in the process. According to an article by Matthew Green of the East Bay Express, a league of “plumbing activists” are putting their technical skills to work combating California state codes that inhibit the widespread use of water-saving greywater systems.

Black Friday in SLO crazy at some places, calm at others

The holiday shopping season kicked off last Friday with an estimated 25 million more consumers heading to the stores on Black Friday than last year, according to a National Retail Federation study and San Luis Obispo saw its share of shoppers lining up to get the first picks of this year’s hot items too.

If James Bond had a desk…

Six years ago, before liberal arts engineering studies senior Bill Trammel became a Cal Poly student, he had an epiphany while sitting at his mahogany desk at home. “What would this desk look like if Q from James Bond designed it?” he asked himself. He pictured a desk with a sliding screen, a finger print recognition system and video conferencing – all from his single, sedentary unit of space.

Two days after his team’s season came to an end, Cal Poly football head coach Rich Ellerson voiced appreciation for what he praised as an extraordinary senior class.

Club is home away from home for Latinos

Attracting Latinos to the agricultural industry, promoting diversity and higher education and providing a home away from home for students is all in a day’s work for Cal Poly’s Latinos in agriculture club.

“If you look back historically, agriculture has not been high on the list of career opportunities for Latinos,” said club advisor and agricultural education and communication department head Robert Flores.

Seventh years aren't just at Hogwarts

Run a mile as fast as you can: 135 beats per minute. Ride a rollercoaster: 153 beats per minute. Peruse the Internet for new shoes: 70 beats per minute. Sit in a desk chair two minutes before class enrollment: 200 beats per minute.

Cal Poly’s class registration, since I’ve been here, has gone from bad to worse.

Marriage and Uncle Sam: a divorce waiting to happen

The fury over Prop 8 involves two equally strident, equally passionate camps; one that wants government to define marriage to allow people of the same sex to marry and another that seeks to restrict marriage to mean a legal union between a man and a woman only.

Weber State ends Cal Poly's season

For months, defenses had tried to get the ball out of the hands of the Cal Poly football team’s offense.

To say they failed would be something of an understatement.

Cal Poly entered its Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) first-round playoff game against Weber State leading the FCS in both yards (481.

Mustangs cruise at home over Idaho

The Cal Poly women’s basketball team routed Idaho 77-60 Saturday to finish the Courtyard by Marriott San Luis Obispo Holiday Beach Classic 2-0.

The Mustangs (4-2) were led by senior forward Megan Harrison’s 17 points. She also contributed four assists.

Cal Poly trailed for just 22 seconds before a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Rachel Clancy gave the Mustangs the lead for good six minutes into the contest.

Letter to the editor: Wisconsin fan impressed

To the Cal Poly students and fans:

I confess – please forgive me – I had the typical reaction when I read that UW had scheduled Cal Poly for a football game. I was partially ameliorated by a great article in Thursday’s (Madison, Wis. Capital Times) sports page about your school, the high academic standards, the team and their unusual history.
