Album review: “Pains of Being Pure at Heart”

I was once told that the way to my heart is a straight, paved road with no obstacles. This, I must confess, is pretty much true, but not entirely. Uncle Sam’s here to help

This week, Obama held town hall meetings in states that have been hit particularly hard by the recession and loss of jobs. Tuesday he spoke with people in Florida, and the public’s belief in Obama was visible. They clamored for the microphone to ask questions and tell him about their personal struggles.

Coaches against cancer

Cal Poly women’s basketball coach Faith Mimnaugh remembers Kay Yow fondly.

At the first mention of her name, Mimnaugh’s eyes give a far-off look, as she recalls not just the greatness of her mentor’s coaching abilities, but the kindness of her heart.

“Coach Yow was a mentor, friend, inspiration . she was everything,” Mimnaugh said.

Michael Nau strikes happy medium in new project

In terms of male bragging rights, the goal of a bar-hookup typically requires either an outright hottie (see Maxim, Poly Dolly) or if you are a hipster, it’s some sort of girl who’s hot mostly because of her brazen uniqueness (see Vice magazine, Williamsburg).

The subtle evolution of the Republican party

President Obama told Anderson Cooper on Tuesday that America has lost one million jobs in the past two months. Because of the California budget crisis, the state of California has paid their employees in IOUs and we at Cal Poly are facing a spike in our registration fees.

Obama: The Next FDR?

With layoffs being reported every day, this is shaping up to be one of the biggest economic downturns since the Great Depression. Although I would prefer not be part of the media hysteria that contributed to the current recession, the economy’s accelerating downward spiral makes the topic difficult to avoid.

Walsh introduces first recruiting class

For college football fans, signing day is the equivalent of the NFL draft to pro fans. It is the day that could determine the success or failure of a team for several years to come.

For fans of Cal Poly football, it is a chance to see what a new coaching regime can do with just three weeks of preparation time to start rebuilding a team that lost the majority of its top-ranked offense and was young on defense.

Republicans behind the times

The fanfare is over and the work has begun on Capitol Hill. In a show of unprecedented bipartisanship, the president met with Republicans Tuesday to hear their concerns over the first major piece of legislation to come from Obama’s administration – and it is a huge proposal.
