At an Interfraternity Council (IFC) meeting Monday, two Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) representatives warned the fraternity leaders about problems with intramural games during fall quarter, including beer cans left on the field, trash, physical contact and communication issues.
According to the representatives, several of these problems that occurred last quarter that had not been occurring in the past.
Sean Pellerin, assistant intramurals coordinator, said there was a misunderstanding about what was allowed on the field, which he said they should have clarified before IFC had their playoffs.
“We had no problems with the participants on the field,” Pellerin said. “We just had an issue because people were making hot coffee and chocolate in the parking lot next to the complex, then serving it to students who were not participating.”
Only water is allowed on the fields because spills can stain the turf, which is expensive to replace.
As a result of these problems, ASI reinstated a waiver that fraternity teams are required to sign.
“We would like to have IFC control it more, but we think it’s going to be a mutual thing were we’re going to have to do a checks and balances,” Pellerin said. “One of the things in the behavior report is that they are responsible for the non-participants that come out to their games.”
There were no real consequences, but according to Pellerin, ASI’s goal is to keep communication lines open and build a stronger working relationship.
“We are here for them,” he said. “They are the ones paying to play in our leagues that we set up for them, so we want to be able to give them the best time possible and of course under certain behavioral agreements.”
IFC President and business administration junior Dominic Hjerpe said IFC is responding to this problem through better communication with ASI.
