Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is offering students and faculty free legal counsel on the first and third Fridays of each month.
The free 15-minute legal consultations were created to give currently enrolled students and faculty answers to any legal questions they might have.
“ASI contracts with a local San Luis Obispo attorney by the name of Jeff Radding,” said Michelle Broom, public relations coordinator for ASI. “For a few years now, he has made himself available for students, faculty, staff, any Cal Poly community member, for 15-minute free consultations regarding any legal issues you may have.”
The consultations, Broom says, can be the first step in helping a student solve issues they can’t resolve on their own.
“He can either talk to you about what your legal problem is, advise you on where you can go seek additional information, maybe even go seek additional legal help, or, for that matter, if it’s something he can help you with, he will also make himself available for a fee,” she said.
ASI saw a need for the resource after realizing most students are far from home and lack substantial knowledge of legal affairs.
“It was actually just something we realized that the students, specifically the students who may not have local resources, you know, their parents are out of town, needed,” Broom said. “We saw the need for a resource that they can come and talk to, for instance, if they’re having concerns with their landlord or an employer.”
Attorney Jeff Radding said he’s been practicing law for more than 25 years. He’s heard a range of questions from students and faculty he is able to offer help with.
“I would say the topics that come from both students and faculty range the whole breadth of possible legal issues, from landlord-tenant, to criminal, to immigration, to business — you name it,” he said.
The consultations are held in the ASI Business Office conference room in the Julian A. McPhee University Union (building 65), room 212.
