The Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) Recruitment and Development Committee will announce the findings of its legal counsel’s look into student government election rules Thursday morning, ASI spokesperson Michelle Broom said Wednesday.
The committee, which announced last Friday it would suspend all fees against candidates until obtaining legal advice, will hold a special meeting at 8 a.m. Thursday.
Committee Chair and biological sciences senior Cale Reid previously said two candidates would be fined $100 after they or their campaign staff spoke to Mustang News for an article on their candidacy. Their actions violated current ASI Election Code, which prohibits “active campaigning” prior to 10 days before the election.
Active campaigning, according to the rules, is “a non-verbal public display or distribution of specific information (physical or electronic) about any ASI candidate.”
At Friday’s committee meeting, the four presidential candidates issued a joint statement asking ASI to lift the restriction so candidates can speak to Mustang News, “in order to provide Cal Poly students with enough information about ourselves that they will be thoroughly informed voters.”
Broom did not provide additional information about what would be announced Thursday. The meeting is at 8 a.m. in the Julian A. McPhee University Union (building 65), room 219, and is open to the public.
