Former Cal Poly cornerback Asa Jackson recorded two tackles and returned a punt during his appearance in the Senior Bowl on Saturday. He was the second Mustang to be invited to the annual event that gives professional scouts another chance to watch possible draft picks.
Jackson was one of four players to the game from Football Championship Subdivision schools. He started the game at left cornerback and made his two stops in the opening minutes against North Carolina’s Dwight Jones and Baylor’s Terrance Ganaway. His punt return was for just two yards, but he averaged 18 yards per return during the season.
Jackson was invited to NFL Scouting Combine, a precursor to the NFL Draft in late April, which takes place in Indianapolis from Feb. 22 to 28. Jackson played for the North squad which defeated the South 23-13 in Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala.
Jackson, a product of Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento, Calif., returned two interceptions for touchdowns during the 2011 season. The first was a 100-yard return against South Dakota State, and the second was brought back 54 yards for a score against Central Oklahoma.
He picked off eight passes in his career as a Mustang in addition to recording 199 tackles and 32 pass break-ups during his four years at Cal Poly.
Former Cal Poly wide reciever Ramses Barden, who now plays for this year’s Superbowl contender the New York Giants, played in the 2009 Senior Bowl.
The Mustang football squad returns to action on Sept. 1 against San Diego at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
