Cal Poly’s Alpha Phi sorority has reached out to the Alpha Phi chapter at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) after two women were shot and killed on the sorority house’s front lawn Friday night, biochemistry junior and Cal Poly Alpha Phi President Bryce Gassner said Saturday evening.
“We did reach out to them and just said to them that we were glad to hear that every member was accounted for, and that if they needed anything from us that we’re here from them, being the closest chapter to them,” Gassner said.
Gassner said she had not yet heard back from members of UCSB Alpha Phi. Her sorority’s international chapter reported that all members of UCSB Alpha Phi had been accounted for since the shooting, she said.
The shootings at the Alpha Phi house Friday night were part of a mass rampage in Isla Vista, in which Santa Barbara City College student Elliot Rodger, 22, allegedly killed six victims and injured 13 others. Santa Barbara authorities say Rodger then killed himself.
Cal Poly Alpha Phi has not yet made further plans to reach out to the UCSB chapter, Gassner said.
“Since this is so new, we haven’t made any moves yet,” Gassner said. “We’re waiting to hear more information and hear back more from our internationals, so once we get more information on everything, then we’ll kind of know what we want to do.”
Gassner said that one member of Cal Poly Alpha Phi was in Santa Barbara visiting friends at UCSB on Friday night when the shootings happened.
“Luckily she was safe,” Gassner said. “She got to an indoor location right away and reached out everyone on our Facebook page about it.”
The two women killed on the lawn of Alpha Phi were members of the UCSB Delta Delta Delta sorority.
A third victim, who was killed in an Isla Vista deli, was a 2012 graduate of San Luis Obispo High School, according to local NBC affiliate KSBY.
Police will not release the names of the three additional victims until notifying next of kin.
