Cal Poly made the move last year to connect the residence halls to the wireless network, and according to director for enterprise systems Paul Jurasin, that process should be finished this summer.
Poly Canyon Village, Cerro Vista Apartments and the Sierra Madre complex are done, Jurasin said, but the rest of the 11 residence halls still do not have access to wireless Internet.
“In Poly Canyon Village and Cerro Vista, the access there is really good, and they don’t seem to be having much problem there,” Jurasin said.
Currently, the rest of campus has approximately 820 wireless access points.
The residence halls have 2,000 now. By the time the implementation is complete, they should have approximately 3,000.
“The wireless access we’re implementing in the residence halls is much more dense,” Jurasin said. “So it will be able to handle students who are streaming with Netflix or gaming or doing a lot of high-bandwidth activities.”
Jurasin said the project hasn’t been completed yet because of funding and personnel.
Each access point, especially the commercial, enterprise-level ones Cal Poly has, costs approximately $1,000 to install, Jurasin said. Multiplied across campus, the costs can reach into the millions.
