Sophomore swimmer Sonny Fierro broke two records en route to a second-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle in the final day of competition at the Pac-12 championships.

On the final day of the 2014 Pac-12 Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday, Cal Poly sophomore Sonny Fierro broke two Cal Poly records and junior Paolo Stanchi broke another to help the Mustangs to an eighth-place finish in Federal Way, Wash.
Fierro improved the school record he had set earlier in the season with a second-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 15 minutes, 0.97 seconds.
Stanchi also had a strong meet. He finished third in the C Final of the 200 breaststroke and 19th overall with a time of 1:59.58. This broke the old mark of 2:00.27 set by Ben Palmer 10 years ago.
Jeff Allison was 23rd overall in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:52.37, while Johnny Dodero followed behind in 24th for the Mustangs.
In the final event of the four-day meet, Cal Poly’s 400 freestyle relay team, consisting of freshman Jack Jenner, junior Mackey Hopen, freshman Caleb Davies and freshman Cody Tanabe, placed seventh overall and touched in a time of 3:01.06.
Cal Poly finished eighth in the team standings with 157 points, while California claimed the conference title with 786 points.
The NCAA Division I National Swimming and Diving Championships will be held in Austin, Texas on March 27-29.
