The suspensions of the remaining four suspended Cal Poly softball players has been lifted, Cal Poly Director of Athletic Communications Brian Thurmond said in an email. He did not specify when the suspension was lifted.
Originally six freshman players — Taylor Yzaguirre, Sierra Hyland, Ashley Tornio, Shawna McDonough, Kiersten Nordin and Courtney Tyler — were put on athletic suspension in the beginning of February; two returned to the team after one weekend. According to softball coach Jenny Condon, the women violated team rules. Thurmond declined to explain the reason in more detail.
Because they were on suspension, the six players were not allowed to participate in the season-opening Kajikawa Classic at Arizona State.
Though the eligible team members had to play positions they were not familiar with, Condon said, they still managed to win two out of five games at the Arizona State classic.
Yzaguirre and Hyland were taken off suspension mid-February just before the Stanford Nike Invitational. Tornio, McDonough, Nordin and Tyler remained on suspension and did not play.
Even with the four still out, the team went 2-3 at the invitational.
The softball box scores on the Cal Poly softball website indicate the four remaining women were taken off suspension in time for the mid-February Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at Cathedral City. Tornio, Nording and Tyler played at least one game in the six-game classic. McDonough’s name did not appear on the box schedule for any of the six.
The team went 3-3 at Cathedral City.
