Student Community Services is doing its part to challenge stereotypes this weekend with help from workshops put on by students, professors, non-profit organizations and other community members.
The Challenge the Status Quo Conference will take place in Chumash Auditorium on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a preview night for the event on Friday, also in Chumash from 6 to 8 p.m. The preview will include slam poetry, two bands, and a question and answer session.
This will be the 12th annual Challenge the Status Quo Conference, and the theme is “The Power of Hope.”
The goal of the conference is not only to challenge stereotypes, but also to demand change and use education in order to implement that change.
The keynote speaker will be Ronda Beaman, director of leadership studies at Cal Poly. Beaman has been named professor of the year at three universities, mother of USA Today’s most creative family and the first recipient of the NEA’s Art of Teaching Award.
Price of admission for students is $5, which buys attendance to four 50-minute workshops, Beaman’s keynote address and a resource fair, as well as breakfast, a taco bar lunch and a raffle ticket.
