Mustang Media Group Editor Sean McMinn: The truth about guns: Regulation, attitudes, safety on campus
Few topics in America can stir a debate as divisive as gun control, and both sides are certainly represented at Cal Poly. This story highlights both those in favor of regulation (University Police Chief George Hughes included) and “good ol’ conservatives” who want more freedom to do with their guns what they will. Excellent video and an interactive infographic make this story a must-read for everyone before their next dinnertime discussion on gun control.
Digital Managing Editor Carly Rickards: Five reasons it’s better to be single on Valentine’s Day
There is no question as to my pick this week, and as usual, it’s not just for the final product. The very funny and creative Paige Cross pitched this list originally as a standard photos-with-text article, but came in a few days later and said she wanted to make interactive graphics. She had never used InDesign before, and her deadline was in two days. She sat in the newsroom for hours learning a brand-new software (picking it up faster than I’ve ever seen) and perfecting the graphics to look and respond exactly how she wanted. And, of course, she still managed to be hilarious and get some reporting in there as well. We will definitely be producing more stories this way, so I hope you guys like these alternative, interactive storytelling methods.
Editor-in-Chief J.J. Jenkins: Baseball sweeps Kansas State in season-opening series
Ian Billings in the unheralded star of the newsroom. I often say that waiting for his photos to pop up in Dropbox is like Christmas Eve. I know whatever he gives us will be amazing, but I still can’t wait to click through to see what he comes up with. On Friday, Ian came through with some truly incredible shots of the Cal Poly baseball team’s opening day, so we decided to publish a photo post to feature many of the shots we couldn’t fit in the print edition. The one above might be my favorite photo of all time.
