Updated: Athletics department confirms names of six suspended players.
Despite having only 11 eligible players following an internal suspension, the Cal Poly softball team notched two wins in the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. this past weekend.
The team suspended six players for violating team rules, head coach Jenny Condon told Mustang News last week, and was forced to play with the limited lineup. The athletics department confirmed on Monday that freshmen Ashley Tornio, Shawna McDonough, Sierra Hyland, Taylor Yzaguirre, Kiersten Nordin and Courtney Tyler were the players suspended.
The Mustangs went 2-3 in the season-opening tournament, notching a win against No. 8 Oregon on Friday and a 9-2 victory over Indiana on Sunday.
Cal Poly was led by senior outfielder Lauren Moreno as she hit three home runs throughout the weekend and drove in a team-high six runs. She hit a total of two homers in her junior season last year.
Junior left-hander Chloe Wurst, the only available pitcher on the staff due to the sanctions, pitched every inning of the tourney and compiled a 4.47 ERA allowing 43 hits and nine walks.
The Mustangs lost 8-4 to Seattle in the season-opening game and dropped 6-5 and 6-3 decisions to San Jose State and San Diego State, respectively.
Cal Poly returns to the diamond this weekend where the Mustangs will play at the Stanford Nike Invitational in Palo Alto.
