For the first time in five games, the Cal Poly men’s basketball team scored at least 60 points, but it wasn’t enough for the Mustangs as they dropped their fourth straight contest with a 69-60 loss at Hawaii on Saturday night.
Senior guard Kyle Odister and sophomore wing David Nwaba led Cal Poly with 12 points, while freshman guard Ridge Shipley knocked down several 3-pointers in the second half and scored nine points for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly (8-14, 4-5 Big West) had no answer for the Rainbow Warriors’ big man Isaac Fotu, though, who scored a game-high 26 points on 10 of 13 shooting from the floor.
It was Cal Poly’s first loss to Hawaii since 1996, as the Mustangs had won five straight meetings entering the contest.
The Mustangs, who trailed by 10 points early in the second half, made it interesting when junior forward Anthony Silvestri’s 3-pointer brought Cal Poly within one with 7:13 to go, but Hawaii finished the game on a 17-9 run to close out the victory.
Senior forward Chris Eversley, Cal Poly’s points-leader averaging 13.7 entering Saturday’s game, scored two points, both off free throws, as he went 0 for 5 from the field.
Hawaii (16-7, 5-4) shot 48.9 percent from the floor to Cal Poly’s 38.6 percent and held the rebound edge, 38-22.
Cal Poly continues a three-game road swing when the Mustangs travel to Cal State Northridge on Thursday.
