While both the Cal Poly men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were able to turn in exceptional individual performances in a dual meet against rival UC Santa Barbara, it proved not enough, as both teams left Santa Barbara with one more loss on their respective records.
Sophomore Sonny Fierro, who won two events, led the men’s team. In the men’s 1,000 yard freestyle, Fierro came in first with a time of 9:26.37. The 500 free was more of a nail-biter as Fierro beat the UC Santa Barbara’s Andrew Barmann by five-hundredths of a second with a time of 4:35.18.
Diver Sami McIntyre, who was also able to capture two events, led the women’s squad. McIntyre, last week’s Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week, won the women’s 1-meter competition with a score of 236.55 and the 3-meter board with a score of 242.25.
Swimmers Rachel Cleak and Nicole Antoniuk were also key contributors for the Mustangs. Cleak won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:05.04 and came in second in the 100 fly with a time of 57.64 seconds. Antoniuk won the 500 free in 5:07.78 and finished second in the 1,000-free in 10:34.50.
On the men’s side, sophomore Micky Mackle was able to accumulate 11 points from a variety of events. Mackle finished second in both the 200 fly (1:52.52) and the 200 individual medley (1:52.49) and claimed third place in the 200 backstroke (1:54.48).
Despite strong individual performances, the men lost to the Gauchos 203-85. The women also lost their dual meet 183-110. Both teams will now prepare for their upcoming conference championship meets.
