A Cal Poly student, Will Rogers, died in a car crash over the weekend.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said the 24-year-old wine and viticulture senior was driving in Santa Maria sometime Friday night when he crashed his Chevrolet Silverado.
Investigators said Rogers was driving fast, eastbound on Clark Avenue, when he drove through the stop sign at the intersection of Clark Avenue and Dominion Road, according to a CHP news release. He drove up an embankment before his truck launched over a fence and landed on its hood in a pasture.
A person driving by saw the truck on its roof, and the CHP was called to the scene the next morning at 7 a.m.
CHP officers declared Rogers dead at the scene.
It’s still unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
Members of Alpha Gamma Rho have created a Facebook event for a memorial barbeque in Rogers’ honor. The event is planned for Sunday at 1 p.m. at the fraternity’s house. Former Alpha Gamma Rho President Josh Pulver said he was a member of the fraternity.
Correction: An campuswide email from University President Jeffrey Armstrong on Wednesday said Rogers was a current student at Cal Poly — not an alumnus, as his fraternity president previously told Mustang News.
