
The Cal Poly football team’s predicament as one of just four Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) teams in California may not change any time soon, but some Cal State Fullerton students would like it to, apparently.
Associated Students Inc. at the campus is reportedly probing interest in the sport and assessing its prospects for a return.
The general decay of college football throughout the state played a role in forcing Cal Poly into an unusual schedule this year featuring more games in the Central time zone (four) than against California opponents (two).
Some light was shed Thursday on one of those games in the Midwest when Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema spoke about Cal Poly during the Big Ten Conference’s media day.

The reason I scheduled Cal Poly is — before we play Michigan, Ohio Sate and Penn State back-to-back — I was set to play Virginia Tech. That didn’t seem like a good idea to me. … Cal Poly was one of the few teams that could get in our schedule and come to Madison.
